About the research

The scope of this project is to develop a fully-automated software system for rapid processing of the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) data that will be collected on regular basis by the Office of Special Investigations at Iowa Department of Transportation. The software system will automatically read the FWD raw data collected by the JILS-20 type FWD machine that Iowa DOT owns and process and analyze the collected data with the algorithms being developed during the Phase I study of the Nondestructive Evaluation of Iowa Pavements project. This system will smoothly integrate the FWD data analysis algorithms and the computer program being used to collect the pavement deflection data. With the implementation of the proposed software system the FWD data will be filtered, processed and analyzed on the fly. About 100,000 FWD deflection basins will be processed and the predicted pavement layer moduli information (indicators of the existing pavement condition) will be presented in a well organized spreadsheet in less than a minute.
