Bridge Engineering Center (BEC) Structure and Infrastructure Engineer Alice Alipour and BEC Structural Engineer Behrouz Shafei were both elevated to American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Fellow status in 2025.

ASCE Fellows—an acknowledgement that less than 3% of ASCE members achieve—have made celebrated contributions and developed creative solutions that change lives around the world. Fellow status must be attained by professional accomplishments via application and election by the Membership Application Review Committee (MARC).

There is no direct admission to the grade of Fellow. Minimum requirements are 10 years of responsible charge in the grade of Member and a P.E. or P.L.S. license.

Alipour, who is also an associate professor in Iowa State University’s Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) Department, earned the status in August. Shafei, also a CCEE associate professor, earned the status earlier in March 2025.

In recognizing Alipour, ASCE’s announcement noted she is “widely known for her multifaceted contributions across research, education, professional service, and outreach” and “has established herself as a national leader in multihazard resilience research.”

It also recognized her efforts to secure over $22 million in research funding and her scholarly output that includes more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles.

In recognizing Shafei, ASCE’s announcement noted outcomes from his more than 75 research projects “have resulted in notable developments, advancing the state of the art and practice, especially by introducing emerging construction materials to improve the safety, performance, and longevity of structural systems.”

It also recognized his efforts as an associate professor in serving as director of Graduate Education for CCEE as well as playing an active role in advising, training, and mentoring students from undergraduates through postdoctoral researchers.

More information about their achievements and recognition are available at ASCE’s announcements on Alipour’s recognition and Shafei’s recognition.
