About the research

Research objective:

Buchanan County will be constructing, with the assistance of the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Bridge Engineering Center (BEC), National Concrete Pavement Technology (CP Tech) Center, and Center for Earthworks Engineering Research (CEER) at Iowa State University, a bridge with several innovative concepts. Although the design concept is not complete, it will likely include the use of cast-on-site slabs that are slid/launched into place, geosynthetic-reinforced soil (GRS) abutments with sheet piling, and high-performance concrete with internal curing. Prior funding for the design, construction (which included materials) and monitoring/evaluation of this project has been obtained through the Innovative Bridge Research and Deployment (IBRD) Program sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

This Iowa DOT project is to continue the monitoring/evaluation and preliminary engineering portions for the IBRD project and associated tasks. The successful implementation of this project has far-reaching implications for the secondary road system in the Iowa as it will allow for the development of a bridge system well adapted for low-volume road applications. This project directly addresses the IBRD goal of demonstrating (and documenting) the effectiveness of innovative materials and construction techniques for the construction of new bridge structures.
