About the research

Research objective:

The objective of this additional scope is to develop designs for “minimum concrete removal” and “deck sliding over the backwall” type concepts, based on the findings from the previous phases of this research project. To this end, candidate bridges will firstly be selected and modeled using finite element (FE) method. Based on FE results, the researchers will assist Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) designers in developing plans that conform to the design concepts. Lastly, a plan for construction observation and post-construction testing will be developed. Various options will be considered during the design development process, e.g., expansion joint type, size and shape of expansion joint, anchorage, amount of concrete removal, way to provide reinforcing bar continuity precast  vs. cast in place panel, joints between new panels and existing structures, and others.

If the project is successful, at the end of the second year, the Iowa DOT will benefit from having better designs for bridge deck joint repair and replacement projects. Improvements are expected in terms of constructability, which will result in improvements in schedule and possibly lower costs. Schedule improvements will reduce time for lane closures, which will have a positive effect on traffic flow. Reducing the amount of time that these projects require under traffic provides safety benefits for both construction workers and road users.
